Until recently, Hodor was a background character that people didn’t focus much on. His original name was Wylis and he was considered a simple-minded servant of the Starks. That changed when the true depth of his character was revealed in season six. Hodor hadn’t always been simple-minded. At one point of time, he was a competent and articulate man with potential.
One day, he suffered a massive seizure and kept murmuring Hodor, Hodor, as he suffered through the episode. This seizure damaged his mind considerably, and he became the Hodor that people were familiar with. It was revealed in season 6, that Bran warged into the young Wylis and linked the minds of the present and past Hodor together. The young stable boy was forced to endure his own death in the future as many wights tear him apart.
During this time, he hears Meera shouting “Hold the door” to ensure Hodor keeps the door closed as Bran and Meera escape. In the past, Wylis murmured Hodor Hodorin an attempt to repeat what Meera was trying to say.
Needless to say, this epic back story and his courage made him a very popular character in the GoT fandom after season six was done. Memes and quotes featuring Hodor became very popular.
