Why Do Students Rent College Books?

Textbooks have become increasingly expensive over the years and some can easily cost $100 to $200. Students often need several new textbooks each semester so they are forced to spend thousands of dollars on these books over their college career. Modern students want to save as much money as they can so they look for alternative options like buying used books or renting them.

Why do students rent college books?

There are a number of advantages of renting college books instead of purchasing new or old ones. While renting is not the right choice for everyone, it can prove to be beneficial for people who want to use them for a short period of time. Here are some reasons why many college students choose this option:

  • They get the latest edition – Publishers and authors often upgrade and alter the information provided in the textbooks according to new research and further investigations. In many cases, the information doesn’t change too drastically, but most students prefer to have the latest and most up-to-date books. They don’t have to pay full price for these new publications if they rent college books.
  • Easy to return – This is also a great benefit of renting books instead of buying them. Students don’t have to worry about storing the book or finding buyers online. They just need to send the book back to the store or lender and not worry about anything else. This saves them time and effort so students can focus on other aspects of their college life.

As mentioned before, renting isn’t for everyone because some students need to hold onto the books for a longer period of time and that can prove to be very expensive. Students who are rough with their books can also be in trouble down the line because most vendors won’t accept the book if it’s too damaged.
